I proudly represent workers who have been harmed by illegal employment practices. I represent employees during workplace disputes, EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) proceedings, BOLI (Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries) proceedings, and in court.
I’m not your typical attorney. I don’t come from “high society.” I come from a family of welders, mechanics, oil workers, and farmers. I’m the first person in my family tree to become a lawyer, and I didn’t have any political connections to help me get into law school. I got to where I am today through sheer hard work.
Before becoming an attorney, I worked a variety of jobs including as a commercial roofer, a forklift operator, and a factory worker at the same automobile assembly plant where my dad worked for 28 years. I relate better to blue-collar folks like the ones I grew up with than the folks over at the country club. And I know from firsthand experience that workers sometimes get a raw deal when their employers don’t follow the rules. That’s why I chose to focus my practice on worker’s rights.
I have always respected and admired those who work tirelessly to make a better life for themselves and their families. When employment laws are broken, the results can be devastating to workers and their families, both financially and emotionally. My goal is to aggressively obtain the best possible outcomes for my clients, so they can get back to their lives and focus on the things that are important to them.
While I strive to obtain a successful outcome for my clients, I also want them to understand and feel comfortable with the process. I know that the legal process can be confusing and intimidating, so I take the time to explain how the process works and what you can expect at the various stages of your case. Throughout the course of representation, I will guide you with straightforward and honest advice, so you can confidently make the best decisions for your career and family.
I have represented workers my entire legal career. I have tried cases before juries and recently obtained a judgment over $1,000,000 in an age discrimination case. Before that, I obtained a $13,000,000 jury verdict for a bakery worker who was defrauded by a trade school. I have argued cases before state and federal appellate courts including a state supreme court.
Although most states are considered “at-will” – meaning the employer can fire you for any reason or for no reason – many people think that means they have no recourse for unfair treatment in the workplace. Fortunately, this frequently not the case. Workers in states like Oregon and Washington have far more protections than most people realize. Here are some of the types of cases I handle as a Portland employment lawyer:
- Sexual harassment
- Race discrimination
- Pregnancy discrimination
- Age discrimination
- Injured worker discrimination (work comp retaliation)
- Wage theft and retaliation
- Wrongful termination
- Sexual orientation discrimination
- Whistleblower retaliation
I am licensed in the states of Oregon, Washington, and Missouri, as well as the federal Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals and Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. I obtained my Juris Doctor from the University of Missouri – Kansas City and my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Truman State University. I am a member of various professional associations, including the National Employment Lawyers Association, the Oregon Trial Lawyers Association, the Missouri Association of Trial Attorneys, and the American Association for Justice.
I am happily married to my high school sweetheart, who you may get to meet if you come by the office on time, as she helps manage the office so I can focus on my client’s cases. Outside of the office, I enjoy watching my kids grow up faster than I’d like, going to concerts with my wife, and taking my old yellow lab on the occasional outdoor adventure.
